Environment Pillar Working Group – notes from the Plenary (May 2025)

Before 2023, Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) Representatives received feedback from linkage groups, which connected the SPCs with the wider Public Participation Network (PPN). However, by late 2023, it became clear that these linkage groups hadn’t been effective in Dublin City PPN. In response, we launched dedicated pillar Working Groups—one per pillar—as dynamic, hands-on hubs to support SPC Representatives, foster discussion, and enable member groups to engage with multiple SPCs.

The June 2024 local elections set the stage for fresh PPN elections. Once the new (and returning) Representatives were in place, the pillar Working Groups sprang into action. For instance, members of the Environment Pillar Working Group gathered at a training and support session in Wynn’s Hotel, led by Ellenora Lynch. They regrouped there again afterward, and have kept the conversation alive via email. In May 2025, they met in person at the PPN Plenary to delve into key questions from their handouts.

The Environment Pillar Working Group is zeroing in on four main objectives:

  1. Strengthening collaboration between Dublin City Councillors and Environment Pillar Representatives.
  2. Learning more about proposing motions at SPC meetings—and how to effectively follow them through.
  3. Holding more in-person gatherings (ideal for a small group) and encouraging greater involvement from other Environment member organizations.
  4. Drafting a PPN policy for refreshments at all PPN events—ensuring meaningful, environmentally responsible choices.

Looking ahead, the next Environment Pillar Working Group meeting is slated for September or October 2025, just ahead of the Plenary.
