The 5th annual PPN/DCU Summer School

The 5th Annual PPN/DCU Summer School, held from 25–28 May at DCU’s Glasnevin Campus and online, proved to be another highly successful and engaging event, bringing together community representatives, volunteers, activists, and local leaders for four days of learning, discussion, and networking. The Summer School has become a valued fixture in the community calendar, and this year’s programme continued its tradition of providing participants with practical knowledge, fresh perspectives, and opportunities to connect with other PPN member groups, from the 4 Dublin based PPNs.

Participants had the option of attending sessions in person on the beautiful Glasnevin Campus in the mornings, or joining remotely online for the evening sessions. This flexibility enabled greater participation and allowed people from different locations and backgrounds to engage fully with the programme. However, it also secured a sense of safety for the in-person class discussions, as these were not recorded. Many attendees commented positively on the accessibility of the event and appreciated the opportunity to experience the university environment while benefiting from the convenience of online access when needed. Many other attendees thanked the organisers for keeping the privacy of the in-person sessions intact.

Throughout the four days, participants took part in a diverse range of sessions designed to support community development, civic participation, leadership, and engagement. The content was widely praised for being relevant, informative, and practical. Speakers and facilitators encouraged active discussion and knowledge sharing, creating a welcoming learning environment where participants felt comfortable contributing their own experiences and ideas. Feedback from attendees highlighted the quality of the presentations and the value of the insights gained during the programme.

The atmosphere throughout the Summer School was positive and collegial. Networking opportunities during breaks and between sessions allowed participants to build new relationships and strengthen existing connections. The refreshments provided each day were particularly well received and contributed to the welcoming and inclusive environment. Many participants noted that these informal moments were an important part of the experience, enabling conversations and collaboration beyond the formal programme.

A key factor in the smooth running of the Summer School was the support provided by Luke Quinlan, Community Engagement Officer. Luke was on hand each day to address logistical issues, assist participants, and ensure that both in-person and online elements operated seamlessly. His approachable manner, responsiveness, and attention to detail were greatly appreciated by attendees and organisers alike. Whether helping with technology, meeting participants and walking with them to the correct room, or resolving practical queries, Luke played an important role in ensuring a positive experience for everyone involved.

The Summer School concluded with a wonderful closing ceremony that celebrated the commitment and achievements of all participants. Certificates were presented in recognition of their engagement and contribution throughout the programme. The ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on the learning, discussions, and connections developed over the four days. Official photographs were taken to mark the occasion, creating lasting memories of a successful event. The photo gallery captures the spirit of the Summer School, showcasing the enthusiasm, participation, and sense of community that characterised the week.

As the 5th Annual PPN/DCU Summer School came to a close, participants left with new knowledge, renewed motivation, and stronger networks. The success of this year’s event once again demonstrated the value of collaboration between Public Participation Networks and DCU in supporting active citizenship, lifelong learning, and community leadership.
